Fall Guys is a free-to-play platform battle royale game developed by Mediatonic and originally published by Devolver Digital. It was first released on August 4, 2020, for PlayStation 4 and Windows. After being acquired by Epic Games, the game became free-to-play on June 21, 2022, and expanded to platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S with full cross-platform play support. Gameplay

Players control jellybean-shaped characters in a series of mini-games, including obstacle courses and survival challenges. Matches typically involve up to 32 players competing across multiple rounds until one winner (or winning team) remains. The game features diverse modes like "Classic," "Knockout," and "Explore," with different rules and player counts. Levels include obstacle navigation, survival challenges, team-based games, and logic puzzles. Players can customize their characters using in-game currency ("Kudos") to purchase cosmetics or progress through a paid battle pass using "Show-Bucks".

Development

Inspired by game shows like Takeshi's Castle and Wipeout, the game initially had a working title of Fools' Gauntlet. It underwent significant changes during development, such as reducing the player count from 100 to 60 to improve gameplay readability. Mediatonic emphasized chaotic yet skill-based gameplay with randomized rounds to replicate the unpredictability of game shows. The game's ragdoll physics and colorful aesthetics were designed to enhance its comedic appeal.

Reception

Fall Guys received positive reviews for its engaging gameplay and vibrant visuals. It achieved commercial success, selling over 10 million copies before transitioning to free-to-play and attracting more than 50 million players afterward. Mediatonic has consistently updated the game with new levels, features, and cosmetics since its launch.
