    Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a 2022 action-adventure tactical role-playing game developed by Ubisoft Milan and Ubisoft Paris for the Nintendo Switch. It is a sequel to Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (2017) and combines characters from Nintendo's Mario franchise with Ubisoft's Rabbids. The game introduces new characters, including Edge, a Rosalina-like Rabbid, and Bowser, alongside returning favorites like Mario, Luigi, and Peach. It also features fully voiced Rabbids for the first time.

    Gameplay

    • Core Mechanics: The game retains its turn-based tactical combat but removes the grid-based layout from its predecessor. Players can freely move characters within a designated area during their turn, introducing real-time elements like dashing into enemies or using environmental objects like Bob-ombs.
    • Exploration: Players explore various planets, solve puzzles, and complete quests given by NPCs. The level design is less linear compared to the previous game.
    • Sparks: These creatures, hybrids of Lumas and Rabbids, grant unique powers to the heroes in battle. Collecting Sparks is central to both gameplay and the story.
    • Team Building: Players can form teams of three from a roster of nine characters, each with unique abilities and skill trees. Sparks add further customization options.

    Story

    The plot revolves around a malevolent entity named Cursa spreading corruption across the galaxy while seeking to absorb the power of Sparks. Mario and his team travel through different planets to rescue Sparks, defeat Cursa’s minions, and restore peace. The story also includes expansions like The Tower of Doooom and The Last Spark Hunter, which add new missions and challenges.

    Reception

    The game received positive reviews for its improved combat system, vibrant graphics, humor, and character customization. However, it was criticized for long loading times and underperformed commercially despite its critical acclaim. Notably, this was the final game in which Charles Martinet voiced Mario and Luigi before stepping down in 2023.

    Additional Content

    Three expansion packs were released post-launch, with the final one featuring Rayman as a playable character.
